Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre

Be Able: Empowering the Disabilities is a transformative platform dedicated to uplifting and empowering People with Disabilities (PWD). Our mission is to educate PWD on the proper use of assistive devices, enhance their communication skills, and introduce them to sports activities for sustainable self-rehabilitation. We aim to foster a community where PWD can confidently navigate their daily lives in metropolitan urban settings like Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Our primary objective is to equip PWD with the knowledge and skills to correctly use assistive devices such as wheelchairs, prosthetics, and orthotics. Through comprehensive education, we aim to improve their independence and quality of life. Our program also provides a platform for PWD to share their experiences and needs with researchers, institutions, and designers, ensuring their voices are heard and their requirements met. Additionally, we focus on building their confidence in communication and encouraging participation in sports activities, ultimately empowering them to join para-sport events and lead fulfilling lives.

Many PWD lack the understanding and confidence to use their assistive devices effectively. This gap often leaves them feeling shy, unconfident, and unaware of the numerous activities available to them. Be Able addresses this by providing targeted education and support, helping PWD to see their potential and live empowered lives.

Our program focuses on the PWD community from Pusat Latihan Perindustrian & Pemulihan (PLPP), which serves an average of 50 PWD students annually. We also engage 10 lecturers from PLPP, 20 undergraduate university students, and 5 university staff from the University of Malaya. By leveraging the university’s facilities, we create an inclusive environment for teaching, rehabilitation, and social interaction.
