In an era of rapid modernization, the importance of Quranic literacy remains vital in shaping the character and moral values of the younger generation. Recognizing this need, Projek Celik Al-Quran was launched to enhance Quranic proficiency among primary school students while providing practical teaching experience to university students. This initiative, led by Dr. Raja Hisyamudin Bin Raja Sulong and a team from Universiti Malaya’s Academy of Islamic Studies (APIUM), has successfully impacted communities through an innovative and engaging approach to learning the Quran.
An Innovative Approach to Quranic Learning
Unlike traditional rote memorization methods, Projek Celik Al-Quran adopted a student-centered approach that emphasized:
-
Engaging teaching techniques – Using the Abahata Al-Jabari method, which incorporates rhythm and melody to enhance retention and learning.
-
Small-group learning – Class sizes were kept small to ensure individualized attention and better progress tracking.
-
University-student mentorship – APIUM students acted as mentors, bridging academic knowledge with practical application in a community setting.
Transformative Impact on Students and Educators
The project not only helped students improve their Quranic skills but also empowered university students with real-world teaching experience and leadership skills. Key achievements include:
-
Enhanced Quranic proficiency – Students showed significant improvement in recognizing Arabic letters and reciting the Quran fluently.
-
Empowered future educators – APIUM students gained hands-on experience, fostering confidence and expertise in Islamic education.
-
Stronger community engagement – Schools, teachers, and parents actively participated in ensuring students' success, creating a supportive learning ecosystem.
-
Character-building through Quranic values – The program instilled discipline, respect, and a deep connection to Islamic teachings among students.
