Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre
The Community Empowerment Project for Single Mothers (PKIT), in collaboration with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), aims to empower single mothers residing at the Baitul Ehsan Women’s Protection Centre (BES). Aligned with MAIS's vision to nurture a community of faith, knowledge, and ethics, this project provides holistic support for these women, addressing their psychological, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual needs.
At BES, single mothers—many of whom are survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation—struggle with anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. PKIT is designed to offer targeted interventions that foster psychological well-being and enhance self-worth. The key knowledge transfer areas include:
The program features a comprehensive range of activities, such as motivational talks, emotional support group counseling, psychosocial skill-building workshops, basic facilitator training, art therapy, and psychoeducational exhibitions. These initiatives aim to instill positive attitudes, self-appreciation, and resilience among single mothers, equipping them to navigate life’s challenges more effectively.
In addition to psychological support, PKIT integrates vocational training in crafts, sewing, cooking, and entrepreneurship. These skills empower single mothers to sustain themselves financially and reintegrate into society with confidence and independence.
By addressing both their emotional and practical needs, PKIT aspires to mitigate mental health challenges, reduce stress, and help single mothers build a fulfilling, balanced life beyond the protection centre.
