Breast cancer stands as the most prevalent form of cancer among Malaysian women, coupled with a concerning trend of poor survival rates. Strikingly, survivors often encounter weight gain post-acute treatment, a paradoxical outcome that demands attention. Despite the potential for a cancer diagnosis to prompt health behavior change, the attitudes of survivors towards dietary modifications vary. Recognizing the critical role of a healthy diet, weight management, and lifestyle in enhancing overall survival, a significant gap emerges – the lack of readily available support from professionals like dietitians and counsellors in clinics. This deficiency leaves only a fraction of patients receiving the vital nutrition advice required for optimal care.
In response, our groundbreaking project is underway. We aim to bridge this gap by creating an infographic nutritional education tool tailored specifically for breast cancer survivors. The two distinct phases, covering nutrition during and after treatment (or long-term survival care), recognize the evolving needs of survivors on their journey.Infographics, our chosen medium, prove invaluable in delivering nutrition education. Their graphic presentation significantly enhances patient understanding, making them a powerful tool in empowering survivors to take control of their health.
To ensure accessibility for the diverse Malaysian population, our infographic nutrition information is meticulously translated into Malay and Mandarin. This inclusivity extends to our online platform, where resources are shared and distributed, fostering a sense of community and support among breast cancer survivors.
Beyond the digital realm, our commitment extends to real-world events, such as public health talks and engagements related to the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Nutrition education is not only disseminated through online channels but is actively delivered to survivors and their caregivers during these events.
By addressing the gaps in nutritional support, our initiative aims not only to inform but to empower breast cancer survivors, fostering a community of resilience and well-being. Together, we embark on a journey towards enhanced survival and improved quality of life for those who have triumphed over breast cancer
