The Problem / Significance

In a world where plastic waste threatens our environment, Go Green Dentistry emerges as a beacon of change. Our project addresses the significant issue of plastic waste in dentistry, particularly in the disposal of sterilization pouches which makes up 12% of our total dental waste. By forging a public-private partnership involving dental clinics, a private practice, and the Faculty of Dentistry at Universiti Malaya, we've implemented a system to segregate and recycle paper and plastic waste generated by these pouches. Plastics are repurposed into keychains, while paper and other plastics are sold to buy-back centers, generating income and reducing landfill waste.

The Solutions / Achievements

The impact is profound. We've slashed clinical waste by 4470 kg, saving RM33,525.00 and offsetting 8193.51 kg of CO2 emissions. In terms of gathered recycled dental waste, around 112.79 kg in total of paper and plastic waste was collected from FODUM, with 56.51 kg of paper and plastic waste from other communities. The grand total of 169.3 kg of recycled waste amounts to 310.33 kg of CO2 of carbon emissions reduced. Around RM 17.34 was generated from sales of this recycled dental waste at UM recycling buy-back facilities.  Moreover, our project has increased awareness and knowledge of green dentistry, paving the way for sustainable practices in the dental community.

The Impact/Benefits

We're advocating for broader integration of green dentistry principles, from educational curriculums to policy initiatives. And with over 169 kg of recyclable waste collected so far, we're committed to a future where dentistry is not only about oral health but also about environmental stewardship. Together, let's continue to support initiatives like Go Green Dentistry, ensuring a healthier planet for generations to come.
