Cognitive Assessment Of Special Needs Children In Quran Lessons
This project is a collaboration with the Centre of Quranic Research aimed at helping the Muslim Special Needs Student to become familiar with arabic letters as part of the process of learning the Quran. The study involves the development of a computer based application that was adapted from the learning method developed by the Faqeh Foundation( an NGO) who supports teaching of the Quran lessons for this group of children. Part of the study tries to evaluate how the students interact with the developed system using biometric research by assessing their visual attention and emotional state during learning. This would give some indication of their level of interest/motivation or difficulties experienced the interaction with the system
The cognitive and mental difficulties faced by some special needs students (autism, Down syndrome, slow learners) when studying Quranic verses using techniques developed by NGOs. This understanding will help researchers suggest potential solutions on how to address issues related to the learning problems experienced by this group of children. Given the nature of this non-verbal group, the proposed human behavioral investigation will apply biometric conceptual research using eye trackers to detect visual attention and arousal rate to characterize their level of interaction and emotional state during learning.
Early Engagement
Engagement with collaborator (Fakih, Center of Quranic Research, Sect 16, PJ)
Engagement with Stakeholders
Engagement with stakeholder (Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi (PPKI) Sek Kebangsaan (1) Sultan Alam Shah, PJ)
Test the developed application with the special needs children (autism, slow learner, cerebral palsy, ADHD) at the school.
Future Enhancement
Students showed increased interest and motivation while learning/interacting with the application.
It is recommended that the same principle is adopted in other syllabus.
Feedback from Communities
Teachers felt that students are more engaged when learning processes are assisted with the use of technology.
