INTRODUCTION

This competition is an opportunity for all secondary students in Malaysia to improve school’s spaces through design and build using used materials and Do-it-Yoursef (DIY).  In 2022,  this competition is run in 3 phases: Phase 1 requires  a proposal for improvement and design ideas, presented using a video, Phase 2 entails the selected teams to develop a model prototype based on the proposed ideas in Phase 1, and Phase 3 demonstrates the selected teams’ ability to build their proposed ideas in their schools. Each selected team in Phase 3 will be supervised by mentors from the Faculty of Built Enviroment, Universiti Malaya. Mr D.I.Y Trading Sdn. Bhd. and Universiti Malaya will fund the cost of competiton in Phase 3. 

OBJECTIVE

  • Foster a culture of DIY research and design among the people community
  • Promote a culture of innovation in the use of recycled materials for ensures environmental sustainability
  • To foster a culture of working professionally (creatively, planning and executing and working in teams) student.
  • To enhance students' soft skills including nature competitive and competitive.
  • To establish a relationship between the school, UM, KPM and Mr D.I.Y Trading Sdn. Bhd.

Phases

Phase 1: Suggestions for improvement and invention ideas by the proposed students via video

Phase 2: Development of a product model that requires a selected team to produce a product model (as proposed in Phase 1) in a detailed as well as presented to the jury; and

Phase 3: The stage of realizing the model that has been made in the school area. Each teams selected to Phase 3 will be mentored by mentors and assistant mentors consisting of University of Malaya lecturers. (*The cost of the competition in Phase 3 will be sponsored by Mr D.I.Y and the University of Malaya.)

Theme

“Facing The New Normal, School Tranformation”

The Covid-19 pandemic has raised a variety of issues including the implementation process education around the world including Malaysia. A variety of issues have arisen inspiring researchers to explore the phenomenon of change in education as well as studying critical issues that arise in this same field there before, during or after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study based on issues or problems in education will lead to new findings, in turn, will have implications for policy and current practices that require modification and improvement in education now. The theme of this DIY Made Simple 2022 contest was introduced is for encouraging the emergence of ideas and products among school students (with the concept of Do-It-Yourself) which can eventually transform the community schools to maximize teaching and learning in the New Norms.
