About CAKnA

The Universiti Malaya Community Program for Residential Colleges (Tier 3) is designed to encourage student involvement in community activities. Through participation, students can contribute to the well-being of the community , develop essential skills like leadership, communication, and teamwork, and enhance their social awareness. The program aims to foster a spirit of volunteerism among students and bring them closer to local communities. Furthermore, it seeks to increase Universiti Malaya's visibility by showcasing its active role in community programs. This guideline ensures that all activities are well-planned, safe, and create a positive impact on everyone involved.

Objectives

  1. Increase Volunteerism: Encourage student participation in community-benefiting activities and provide opportunities for leadership and teamwork skill development.
  2. Connect Students with the Community: Instill a sense of social responsibility and produce graduates who are accountable to local communities.
  3. Enhance Universiti Malaya's Visibility: Showcase Universiti Malaya as an institution active in community programs and increase its visibility through positive societal contributions.

Program Principles

  1. Inclusivity: All students are encouraged to participate regardless of background. Activities should be inclusive and welcoming.
  2. Sustainability: Projects should have a positive and lasting impact on the community, with activities designed to be continued by the community after the project ends.
  3. Creativity: Innovative and engaging approaches are encouraged to attract community interest. Students are encouraged to think creatively and develop new solutions for community issues.

Beneficiary Community & Project Location

Projects should address genuine community needs identified through research or initial observations. UMCares will determine project locations by state or parliamentary constituency. Each college will be responsible for one project in an assigned zone.
  • Central Zone: Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka
  • Eastern Zone: Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang
  • Southern Zone: Johor
  • Northern Zone: Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak

Criteria

  • Student Involvement: Students must actively participate in all project phases: planning, execution, and evaluation. Diverse student participation is encouraged to ensure variety, inclusiveness, and unity.
  • Beneficiary Community & Project Location: Projects should address genuine community needs identified through research or initial observations. UMCares will determine project locations by state or parliamentary constituency. Each college will be responsible for one project in an assigned zone.
  • Knowledge and Skill Transfer: Each project must include at least one knowledge/technology/skill transfer session (student to community or vice versa) and one community service activity conducted with the local community. Experienced facilitators should be involved.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Collaboration with Residential College Alumni, NGOs, government agencies, or the private sector is highly encouraged and must be supported by documentation of financial or non-financial contributions.
  • Project Visibility: Projects need active promotion through traditional media (following Universiti Malaya's procedures) and official digital platforms of the residential college, in collaboration with UMCares for wider dissemination. An opening or closing ceremony involving Universiti Malaya management and strategic partners should be organized and communicated to UMCares in advance.
  • Documentation and Implementation Period: Each project requires complete documentation, including videos, activity photos, and a comprehensive project report, along with supporting forms and confirmation of community involvement. All projects must be carried out within the current year, with flexible implementation periods determined by the residential college management.
