UMCares@Ranau: Bridging the "Ivory Tower" and Grassroots Community

4 Quality Education
11 Sustainable Cities
17 Partnerships

This comprehensive day-long event was designed to celebrate the richness of Malay cultural identity while fostering deep social integration between the public and the academic community of Universiti Malaya.

Morning sessions focused on the "roots" of society through the Rewang Competition, revitalizing communal cooking. Creative bridges were built for the youth via children’s reading competitions and traditional musical drama, acting as educational tools to pass down intangible heritage.

The afternoon session focused on Social Cohesion, involving UM staff and students in traditional Folk Sports (Sukan Rakyat). From congkak to tug-of-war, these games used the universal language of play to build mutual respect and friendship between researchers and the local community.

UMCares recently formalized the technology transfer at FELCRA Seberang Perak, introducing an advanced Vertical Planting System for Kacip Fatimah. This innovative approach modernizes traditional herbal farming, making it space-efficient and highly productive for the local community.

This impactful project is a collaboration between Universiti Malaya (UM) and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) under the Social Innovation Fund. By bringing lab-developed high-tech solutions to the field, the initiative aims to boost the local economy while promoting sustainable environmental practices.

From smart irrigation to vertical setups, UMCares is empowering farmers with the tools of tomorrow, transforming the landscape of Malaysian agriculture through science and industry partnership.
